August Tea Time Treats: The Round-Up!

Inspired by the glorious warm summery weather this month's theme was Ice Creams, Jellies and Chilled Desserts. Grab a sun lounger, pop on your sunglasses and enjoy August's Tea Tim Treats table!

Elizabeth's Kitchen Diary was first to the Tea Time Treats Table with this brilliant and beautifully photographed Brandied Cherry Ice Cream, an indulgent, grown-up version of one of Elizabeth's favourite childhood ice cream flavours.

Bank Holiday Baking: Plum and Almond Tarts

Well I never.

It's a Bank Holiday weekend and the forecast is for sunshine*. Bring out the BBQs. Slap on the sunscreen. Pour me an extra large glass of Pimms!

But that's not the only reason to be cheerful this weekend.

The Great British Bake Off returned this week, to a record number of viewers.

The best joke at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival was one about chocolate (Rob Auton's: 'I heard a rumour that Cadbury is bringing out an oriental chocolate bar. Could be a Chinese Wispa').

We discovered M&M's Coconut, which my brother and his new wife kindly brought back for us from their honeymoon. Imagine the genius child of a pack of Smarties and a Bounty bar and you'd be halfway there.

Baby Love: Rose, Vanilla and Strawberry Cake

It's all about the Baby Love at the moment.

Bonnie Prince George, the most eagerly-anticipated and headline-hogging baby ever was born just over two and half weeks ago.

Were you knitting multicoloured Royal booties before the bookies were even taking bets on there being a Royal baby in 2013? Did your record that moment (to show to the grandchildren of course) when the Duke and Duchess proudly showed the world their baby son? Followed by William expertly showing every new Dad how to coolly fix a babyseat into a Range Rover when watched by about a thousand photographers? Or did the frontpage of Private Eye appeal instead?

And it wasn't just Kate-n-Wills enjoying a delivery from the Stork (no, no, not the margerine kind!). There's another Royal baby on the way and Simon Cowell caused scandal both sides of the Atlantic this week.

The Great British Bake Off Returns! Hurrah for Series 4!

Hold the front pages. Pause the watercooler moments. Cancel any plans for Tuesday evenings for the next ten weeks. Watch sales of baking powder soar.

Hurrah!

After a tantalising teaser of a trailer was released last week, set to the suitably majestic Hallelujah by Handal, I wondered what exactly Series 4 has in store...

Why baking is not a fad and Almond, White Chocolate and Blueberry Cake

The other day I was loitering in the baking aisle of the supermarket, as indeed I do most weeks, when I overheard this conversation:

'Thing is with baking, it's such a fad. It's in fashion now, I know. But who really likes those sickly sweet creations? And who really wants to spend hours in the kitchen when Patisserie Valerie is just round the corner?'

I turned, aghast. 'Well, excuse me' I wanted to say 'Excuse me! Have you not heard of the popularity of The Great British Bake Off?* The baking boom that has led to sales of butter soaring according to newspaper headlines last week? Do you not know that Bake Sales are the best and most delicious way to raise money for charity? It's certainly not a fad! A fad, my friend, is the shellsuit, the cabbage soup diet and the tamagotchi'

What to Bake in a Heatwave: Summer Puddings!

Ice cream sales rocketed as an entire nation's diet consisted of three 'Magnums' a day.

BBQ, burger and charcoal makers struggled to keep up with demand.

Punch-and-Judy were so thrilled with the gigantic volumes of visitors to Brighton Beach they actually stopped arguing for the first time in three hundred and fifty one years.

Flights to the Med were cancelled as holidaymakers realised it was at least fifty five degrees hotter in Tenby than Tenerife.

I am, of course, talking about the recent Heatwave.

The only problem was that it was exceptionally boiling to bake.  A somewhat debilitating side effect for a writer of a cake blog.

Trouble was, switching on the oven increased the humidity in the house by about two thousand per cent. Using energy to mix or stir when the same energy could be used to unwrap another Magnum was quite frankly wasteful. Chocolate was melting faster than I could say 'But I don't even need melted chocolate for this recipe!'.
